Roof structure assessment & inspection process before installing solar power system

Roof structure assessment & inspection process before installing solar power system

STEP 1: COLLECTING BASIC INFORMATION

Purpose: Understand the current characteristics of the roof.

Content:

Roof type: flat roof, sloping roof, corrugated iron roof, tile roof, concrete roof...

Usable roof area.

Year of construction and design documents (if any).

Environmental factors: storms, solar radiation, corrosion (near the sea, industrial park...)

STEP 2: CHECKING THE ACTUAL CONDITION OF THE ROOF

Purpose: Determine the physical condition and existing damage.

Inspection content:

Observation with the naked eye: cracks, sagging, rust, subsidence, etc.

Measure the slope and tilt of the roof.

Determine the roof coating: waterproofing layer, insulation layer.

Check the roof drainage system.

Record obstacles (chimneys, antennas, skylights, etc.)

STEP 3: ANALYZE THE STRUCTURAL BEARING

Purpose: Ensure that the roof is capable of withstanding the load of the solar system.

Content:

Calculate the load of the solar system: panels, support frame, ballast, conductors...

Calculate the wind load (according to local standards).

Check the load-bearing capacity of the existing roof (according to design documents or recalculation).

If necessary, conduct field experiments (e.g. load testing, core drilling to check concrete...).

STEP 4: STRUCTURAL SAFETY ASSESSMENT

Purpose: To conclude the ability to accept the solar energy system.

Content:

Compare the design load and the actual load added by the solar energy.

Determine the most suitable roof location to install the system (avoid weak spots).

If not qualified → propose reinforcement (sub-beams, support columns...).

STEP 5: PREPARE ASSESSMENT REPORT

Purpose: To serve as a basis for deciding on implementation and keeping technical records.

Required content:

Roof diagram.

Photos of current status and proposed installation location.

Calculation results/load-bearing test documents.

Conclusion and recommendations: can be installed, needs reinforcement, or not recommended for installation.

STEP 6: APPROVAL & PREPARATION FOR IMPLEMENTATION

Send report to investor/construction technical department.

After approval → move to detailed solar power system design phase.
